This week I continued working on my project and more so focusing on my on screen version of the story about my grandmother. I have now fully planned what my on screen version will be. I am prototyping an app that tells this story of The Little Red Dress. So I started by drawing out a storyboard and the wireframes of the app. This way I know exactly what the user flow is and what it needs to include. For the app I will have the recording of my grandmother telling the story on repeat, getting more distorted each time until you can't understand anything she is saying. The app isn't going to prioritize functionality, I want the app and the buttons to symbolize dementia and what it's like to go through it and have dementia. I know I want Illustrations in my app that help bring visualization to the story and have them popping in and covering text to make it hard or impossible to read.
This week we read The Weaving of Design and Community by Julie Baugnet. The beginning of the reading talks about how graphic designers have been creating a strong bond between themselves and with their community. Baugnet also talked about how when the market in the midwest was doing poorly designers were just trying to get their hands on something. One thing that really stood out to me in the reading was that designers that work in commercial items, merchandising, and advertising can change how the consumers talk, think, and feel. Designers have the power to change a whole society and like Spiderman, "with great power comes great responsibility." This takes me to a different part in the reading where Baugnet talks about another design Sui Lee. Lee is a designer that works forty hours a week and she would still volunteer at MAP for different meaningful projects like Children Dental Service. This shows how she recognizes that through design she can help not only children but society as a whole. Sue Crolick is another designer who helped society by joining the Aliveness Project, she gathered a lot of designers and they painted 650 boxes that were then filled with gifts. These boxes were delivered to people with AIDS during December. This story really touched my heart and both of these incredible women have inspired me and I would like to give back to my community someday the way they have.
