This week we had a guest speaker Sarah Matthews, who is a Printmaker and book Artist. She was really inspirational. She started designing when she ordered invitations for her wedding and ended up not liking them so she thought hey I could make them myself. One of her projects that really stood out to me was this book she made about Frida Kahlo. She found a book about Frida and beside it was a book about wallpaper. Matthews told us that the book about wallpapers complemented the book and Frida Kahlo and decided to merge them. Another project that stood out to me was the book Matthews made about her mother. It was such a personal book that included all her moms poems and that project made me think about the book I want to make about my grandmother. On Thursday this week we didn't have class due to the snow and icy conditions outside but I still made a point to make some progress for my on screen version of this project. I know I still want to make an app that tells this story of The Girl in the Little Red Dress. So I started by drawing out the little red dress because I know I want Illustrations in my app that help bring visualization to the story and a voice recording of my grandmother telling the story over and over herself to capture how the story changes from her dementia.
The reading this week starts off with a conversation/ Q&A with Randy J. Hunt, Hunt was asked where he draws the line, and he stated he won’t work with people he doesn't like or respect. This really stood out to me because I want to show off more of my meaningful and important topics and beliefs in my work and designs but afraid it will cost me job opportunities and work. However, after reading this It made me realize that I don't want a job with a company who votes against me or women. If an employer doesn't want to hire me because of that then I'm more than happy to receive that rejection. Another part of the reading that stood out to me was the warning labels on cigarettes, specifically the one with the teeth and warning about mouth disease. This cigarette packaging reminds me of those in Europe and I think we should have more designs like this on all cigarettes and even vape packaging. It would help people realize the seriousness and the true consequences of vaping and smoking. I also enjoyed seeing all the AIGA vote posters.
