This week I have finished working on my on screen version of my project and am now starting to focus on my packaging. For my packaging I'm planning on packaging myself and memories I have with my grandmother so she can always remember me. I started creating my moodboard for this part of the project. It includes imagery of movies we watched that we still talk about and reference to this day. It also includes a perfume I always wear that she loves and toys she bought me as a kid. I'm hoping that this is something that I'll actually give to my grandmother. I was also thinking about packaging things from the story for her to have and always remember her dress and traveling to Atlanta with her family as a child. I was thinking about researching bus tickets back to them and creating one of my own to include in the box as well as a red dress. I thought it would also include a red lipstick and a military badge or hat. I think these two packaging ideas executed correctly could serve as a beautiful time capsule and reminders of me and the story.
This week the reading started off with talking about how designers are equipped to make and communicate and how that can generate cash and compassion. Which off the bat started making me think of the lack of compassion we have at this moment in america. As a gay designer, I can start using my creativity and design skills to help people view the world and America through someone else's eyes and fears. Just like in the reading where we see the Obama packaging that says "please save us! this place is a mess." I think often we as people get caught up in ourselves and not thinking about others. That's why I am really enjoying the project we are working on because I'm learning so much about my classmates and the personal struggles they go through day to day.
